Something to think about this Presidents Day 2022
“Who is your favorite President, and why?” is a question that all Americans are asked, sometimes during a dinner conversation, always in high school history class. As I planned the chapters and layout of my book THE IMMIGRANT SUPERPOWER, telling the history of American policy through the decisions of the presidents since 1789 struck me as both interesting and original. It turns out, the relationship between presidential greatness and immigration policy is amazingly tight.
The fullest treatment is in the book, but I published a short extension essay in Defining Ideas this weekend. In fact, about 50 percent of greatness ratings are explained by the president’s openness to immigration as measured by policy, not by measurable flows. Here’s a highlight and a link:
