Weird presidential fact & short post here.
Guess which presidential candidate had the largest margin of victory in raw numbers? This candidate is arguably the most popular in U.S. history. The answer might blow your mind. Here are the four finalists …
And the answer is: Richard Nixon.
In 1972, President Nixon won his re-election campaign with the largest margin of victory ever before or since of 17.99 million votes.
The only presidents who come close are Ronald Reagan 1984 (also a re-elect) with 16.8 million more votes than his opponent and Lyndon Johnson in 1964 with a margin of 15.9 million. The only other president with an 8-figure victory margin was Franklin D. Roosevelt’s re-election in 1936. In percentage terms, FDR probably had the highest margin, though the raw vote margin was “only” 11 million.
